2024 Criticism and Records
Astro Bot Put a New Idea in Every Short Stage
A small robot led the 2024 selections ahead of huge RPGs and story-heavy blockbusters. Astro Bot did not rely on familiar characters alone. Each stage introduced a new idea and moved on before it became repetitive.
The Overall Share Was Modest, but Major Awards Agreed
Astro Bot accounted for 113, or 38.6%, of the 2024 records. Metaphor: ReFantazio had 48 and Balatro had 44. The share was not overwhelming, but a 3D platformer finishing ahead of both large RPGs and a compact card game was still unusual.
The Game Awards chose Astro Bot as the best game. D.I.C.E. Awards, BAFTA and Game Developers Choice Awards also made the same choice. It won five awards at BAFTA, including Animation, Sound, Best Game, Family, and Game Design. It received stronger support in the developer and judge-centered awards ceremony than in the general year-end list. [1] [2] [3] [4]
This did not make scale irrelevant in 2024. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Metaphor offered long stories and layered systems, while Black Myth: Wukong delivered technical spectacle. Astro Bot showed that a shorter game with a light story could compete when every movement felt carefully made.
Good Ideas Ended Before They Became Repetitive
Each stage introduced a new ability or material, varied it a few times, then ended before it became routine. Inflating to fly, slowing time, or absorbing surfaces to change shape never lasted too long. Team Asobi spent ideas freely and trusted the next surprise to carry the game.
Team Asobi's Nicolas Doucet said he wanted controls and toy-like responses that anyone could understand. Push Square's interview also introduced the process of directly connecting the ideas of each level with the functions of the DualSense controller. [5] [6]
Controller vibration varies depending on the material underfoot. Small robots respond with movement and sound. Objects on walls and floors also shake immediately when they hit each other. There is no need to explain these techniques separately. You can feel it in your hands just by the basic actions of jumping and bumping.
PlayStation History Became a Toy, Not a Museum
Astro Bot includes many old PlayStation characters and devices, so nostalgia clearly adds to its appeal. Finding a familiar face is part of the fun. For someone without that history, however, a few scenes may look like little more than a costume collection.
The best references do more than display a name. They turn weapons and movements from older games into short playable stages. Newcomers can enjoy the mechanic by itself, while returning players can recognize how neatly it captures the original.
PlayStation Blog's account of Astro's transformations shows the same approach. The character communicates through posture, eyes, and quick movements instead of long explanations. Astro can represent PlayStation history while remaining readable to someone meeting him for the first time. [7]
A Cheerful Game Was Not a Small Achievement
Long, serious stories can appear more ambitious, but Astro Bot showed how much craft pure enjoyment requires. Failure restarts quickly, collectibles announce themselves through sights and sounds, and rules simple enough for young players still support difficult moves for experienced ones.
The 113 records include 104 editorial, 5 reader, 3 industry, and 1 mixed selection. Editorial choices, not a wave of PlayStation fan votes, drove the result. Even so, the share stopped at 38.6%. Many voters preferred Metaphor's social themes and long story or Balatro's compact but deep rules.
The result does not mean every game should now be short and cheerful. Astro Bot's lesson lies in its density. It rarely asked players to repeat an idea after its value was clear, and even familiar jumps stayed satisfying. It did not win because it was small; it won because it packed so much pleasure into its running time.
